History - How it started

HOW IT STARTED

Designed in 1909 by Ware & Treganza, the leading architectural firm in the Intermountain West, the Commercial Club Building was the first space of its kind to offer prominent residents of Salt Lake City a place to gather, socialize, and entertain guests visiting from around the country.

The Center of Social Life

THE CENTER OF SOCIAL LIFE

Located in the heart of Downtown Salt Lake City, the original Commercial Club featured game rooms, luxury overnight accommodations, a swimming pool, and at its center, an expansive, 2,700-square-foot ballroom designed with floor-to-ceiling windows and a towering, frescoed ceiling.

A Moment Immortalized

A MOMENT IMMORTALIZED

To inaugurate the building, the founders placed a time capsule behind the cornerstone to commemorate the occasion. In 2017, the Salt Lake Chamber unearthed the capsule and added new artifacts reflecting its present-day story and sealed them within the cornerstone once more — to be opened on the Chamber’s 200th anniversary in 2087.

Restored Ballroom

Over a century later, the space has been thoughtfully restored as The Ballroom at the Commercial Club, with great care taken to preserve its historic details.

Seamlessly blending modern comforts with the elegance of its storied past, The Ballroom is an ideal setting for galas, fundraisers, weddings, film shoots, art exhibitions, and more.
